Match Report: Doncaster vs Newcastle Thunder

Doncaster RLFC have progressed to the fifth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup with a 34-0 win over fellow League One side Newcastle Thunder.

Four second half tries by Doncaster saw Richard Horne’s side defeat the Newcastle Thunder to book their place in the next round of the Challenge Cup.

Doncaster were the first side on the score sheet having had a poor start to their sets of six but they found the rhythm in the seventh minute when a string of passes by the forwards found ex Castleford fullback Richard Owen who dived over to make it 4-0.

Liam Harris doubled the homes side’s lead in the 25th minute when he side-stepped his way past the Thunders defence finding a gap and touching down to give Doncaster a health ten point lead. Harris converts 12-0.

Jack Sanderson scored his third try in two games for Doncaster in the 50th minute when an arching pass by Liam Harris found the Hull FC loanee who dived over on the left hand side to make it 16-0.

Liam Welham further extended Doncaster’s lead when fullback Richard Owen put in a low pitch perfect kick to the 29 year – old Welham who used his pace to ground the ball for the first time this season.

The Dons extended their lead once again when a poor judgement by the Newcastle fullback, Theerapol Ritson saw Aaron Jones Bishop pick up the ball with ease and touch down to make it 26-0.

Halfback Liam Harris scores his fifth try in three games having joined Doncaster from Hull Kingston Rovers in pre season.

Sam Doherty then made it 32-0 to the Dons, after a complex run of play which saw a kick by Harris spilled by Newcastle and was shifted right to Sam Doherty who was waiting patiently on the wing.

Doncaster head coach Richard Horne was pleased with his side’s defence but saw negatives in the first half which they need to improve on when they face the Thunder again this Sunday.

“In the first half we struggled, we camped in our own half and on our own goal line,” said Horne.

“We showed some real steel in our defence and we wrestled well, defending what they threw at us.

“It was a lot better in the second half, the intensity that the lads are working at is really pleasing,”

“If we can continue to do that week in week out then we can certainly cause teams problems.

“In pre season we worked a lot of our defence, we need to keep working on that and we are giving ourselves chances.”
