York City Knights head coach James Ford spoke to LeagueOneHub about his side’s pre-season preparations and their successful duel registration partnership with Super League’s Hull KR.
The Knights opened their pre season campaign with a win against a select side from local sides based within York. This was before a match played against Hull KR which was part of winger Ben Cockayne’s testimonial.
A massive downside during their pre-season campaign, especially against Featherstone and Hull KR, was working out their combinations as a group something James Ford talked about.
“Working out our best combinations and becoming much more fluent in possession is what we need to improve on,” Ford told LeagueOneHub.
“Players do play’s differently and it takes time for groups to become cohesive.
“Some of our systems are new to some of our players and it’ll take time for them to have full clarity with these.
“We’re pleased with our preseason program and are excited to showcase league one against Bradford Bulls on 18/2.”
At the end of 2016 it was announced that York had started a partnership with Super League side Hull KR and James Ford knows that this relationship with the East Yorkshire side could play a key role in York’s season.
“We’ve got a fantastic relationship which is much more than player access,” added Ford.
“I’ve been involved where the process hasn’t worked also – there needs to be a mutual respect and a good working relationship at all levels for it to be successful.
“It’s going to be an incredibly tough season.
“Clubs have made some really positive signings.
“We’ll take it a game at a time and try to improve weekly. We can only influence how good we are so that’s where we’ll invest our energies.”
